While the fires were ravaging the Los Angeles area, Archbishop Hovnan Derderian reached out to victims and volunteers within the diocese to render aid where necessary. A comprehensive list of assistance was prepared and distributed throughout the diocese. Many of the aid options, whether through FEMA or private insurance, involve filling out forms and answering questions which might be challenging for our elderly population. Archbishop Hovnan asked the Deacons Council of the Western Diocese to assist with translation and logistical tasks to victims.
At an emergency session, the Deacons Council set up a special fund to aid two families who have sustained devastating losses - complete loss of house and home. Of the many families affected by the fire, these two families have been selected in consultation with the Primate, because of the losses compounded with no means of support. This special fund in its entirety – 100% of the funds collected – will be turned over to these families on March 22, 2025,
