Primate Pays Pastoral Visit to Armenian-Mexican Community
Published - 21 January 2017

Tremendous progress has been made in the short span to further the mission of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Mexico City and to support the Mexican-Armenian community in search of their ancestral roots.

On January 14, 2017, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian paid a pastoral visit to the Armenian-Mexican community in Mexico City. His Eminence was accompanied by the Very Rev. Fr. Sasoon Dz. V. Zumrookhdian, Archpriest Fr. Manoug Markarian and Mr. Asadour Sarafian.  In the evening, a welcoming reception was graciously hosted by the Armenian Ambassador to Mexico His Excellency Ara Ayvazyan. In his remarks, Ambassador Ayvazyan expressed his gratitude to the Primate for the pastoral guidance of the Mexican-Armenian community noting his positive impact on the community since his first visit.

On Sunday, January 15, 2017, Archbishop Derderian celebrated the Divine Liturgy at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church in Mexico City marking it the second time that the Divine Liturgy of the Divine Liturgy of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church was celebrated in the land of the Aztecs. Armenian Ambassador to Mexico H.E. Ara Ayvazyan, embassy staff and members of the Armenian-Mexican community participated in the service.

In his remarks, the Primate expressed his wholehearted gratitude to His Grace Bishop George Saad Abi Younes, the Bishop of the Maronite Church of Mexico for the warm reception and cordial hospitality. Archbishop Derderian presented a souvenir to Bishop Abi Younes’ representative as a token of his appreciation.

During his trip Archbishop Derderian also met with His Excellency Eduardo Malayan, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Mexico and other prominent members of the Armenian-Mexican community.

The Diocese of the Armenian Church of Mexico was transferred to operate under the jurisdiction of the Western Diocese in November 2014 by the Pontifical Encyclical of His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians.
