WHEN DESERTS BLOSSOM: By Diran Avagyan

There are places in California that make one wonder how they were ever urbanized. Palm Desert is one of them. Lying under a scorching sun and surrounded by formidable mountains, it was known as a “sand hole” before the 1920s. Today, it has become a cluster of resort towns—an oasis with fountains, waterfalls, striking landscapes, and beautiful architecture.

While some complain about the recent heat waves in Southern California, I found myself imagining how these resort cities were first built under such relentless heat.

Through sweat and tears, through physical labor, frustration, and hope, that “sand hole” was transformed from lifelessness into liveliness.

This reflection reminds us that without sustained effort, even an oasis can dry out; yet through hard work, an oasis can be created in the most unlikely places.

The prophet Isaiah says, “the wilderness and the dry land shall be glad… the desert shall rejoice and blossom” (Isaiah 35:1).

Just as the prophet says, may the deserts of our souls blossom with life.
