Median Day of Lent Celebrated at the Western Diocese
Published - 13 March 2026

On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America marked the Median Day of Lent, known as Mitchink, with a day of prayer, reflection, and fellowship at St. Leon Ghevontiants Armenian Cathedral. At 10:30 a.m., the Diocesan Primate, Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, presided over the Sunrise (Arevakal) Service with the participation of diocesan clergy and faithful. The service offered a meaningful opportunity for the faithful to pause at the midpoint of the Lenten journey, reflecting on the spiritual discipline and renewal that characterize this sacred season.

Following the service, the faithful gathered in the Nazareth and Sima Kalaydjian Hall for a Lenten reception organized by the Ladies of the Religious Education Department of the Western Diocese. The gathering featured a keynote presentation by the Diocese’s Librarian and Ecumenical Officer, Hayk Madoyan (in Armenian), who reflected on the spiritual significance of Mitchink within the life of the Armenian Church and its role as a moment of encouragement during the Lenten journey. The reception provided a warm atmosphere of fellowship and reflection as participants shared in Lenten hospitality and conversation.

In the evening, at 6:00 p.m., hundreds of faithful participated in the evening prayer vigil (Husgoom) presided by the Diocesan Primate, gathering in prayer and contemplation as the Lenten season continues. In his remarks, Archbishop Derderian spoke about the importance of walking alongside Christ during the Great Lent, reminding the faithful that this sacred journey calls for humility, perseverance, and spiritual attentiveness. He encouraged the faithful to seek the Lord’s guidance whenever they falter and to remain mindful of Christ’s presence throughout their spiritual pilgrimage.

His Eminence further reminded the faithful to remain steadfast in prayer during the Great Lent and to rely on God’s strength and mercy throughout the journey that leads to Christ’s victorious Resurrection. Following the vigil, a Lenten dinner was held in the Kalaydjian Hall, presided over by the Cathedral’s Pastor, Rev. Fr. Khajag Shahbazyan, and organized by the Good Samaritan Ladies Society. The gathering concluded the day’s observances in a spirit of fellowship, as clergy and faithful shared in the communal life of the Church while continuing their prayerful preparation for the celebration of the Holy Resurrection.
