On Thursday, October 17, 2024, the Armenian American young leaders participating in the KAKEHASHI Project, led by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America, were warmly welcomed by Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles Mr. Kenko Sone and Mrs. Mami Sone at their residence.

The Consul General and Mrs. Sone, joined by Consul Makito Ohikata and Consul Kumiko Nada, greeted the guests at the entrance before escorting them inside, where attendees signed the guestbook. Following a group photo in the garden and a gift exchange, the guests were invited to the dining room to enjoy a curated selection of traditional Japanese dishes and beverages. The thoughtfully prepared menu delighted the senses, offering both gastronomical and aesthetic satisfaction.

During dinner, conversation flowed easily in a warm and cordial atmosphere. Guests expressed sincere gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to them. Discussions revolved around strengthening cultural ties between the Armenian American community and Japan, with a shared focus on preserving cultural identities far from home. Consul General Sone outlined initiatives aimed at empowering Japanese American youth by fostering deeper connections with their heritage. Archbishop Derderian shared insights from organizing pilgrimages to Armenia, highlighting the profound impact such experiences leave on Armenian American youth.

The evening also provided an opportunity to explore future collaborations. Upon the delegation’s return to Los Angeles, the Western Diocese and the Consulate General of Japan will co-host an event in December, where KAKEHASHI Project participants will share their impressions and key takeaways from their journey to Japan.

The gathering concluded on a joyful note, with participants expressing excitement for their upcoming trip to Japan, now just days away. This evening set the stage for meaningful collaboration and lasting friendships between the two communities.
