A Memorable Week at HyeCamp
Published - 25 July 2025

On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America, visited HyeCamp in Dunlap, California. Accompanied by the Diocese's Executive Director, Dn. Harout Markarian, the Archbishop was warmly welcomed by the campers and counselors to the camp’s serene and retreat-like environment. His visit brought joy and spiritual encouragement to the young participants, who spend their summer at HyeCamp connecting with nature, faith, and the Armenian heritage. This week's religious instructors at HyeCamp were the Rev. Fr. Mesrop Ash, Pastor of St. John Armenian Church of San Francisco and the Rev. Fr. Yessai Bedros, Pastor of St. Paul Armenian Church of Fresno.

During his visit, Archbishop Derderian addressed the campers, speaking passionately about the importance of cultivating a friendship with God through the power of prayer. He also emphasized the significance of the Armenian Apostolic Church’s centuries-old traditions, encouraging the youth to carry these spiritual and cultural values into their daily lives. The Archbishop’s words resonated deeply with the campers, many of whom found inspiration in his heartfelt message about faith and community.

In addition to his spiritual guidance, Archbishop Derderian shared quality time with the campers by participating in recreational activities, including basketball and a lively game of table tennis. His approachable and caring demeanor left a lasting impression on everyone present. Each summer, more than 1,200 campers take part in the Western Diocese youth camp programs in various locations, including Dunlap, Burbank, Van Nuys, Pasadena, Scottsdale, Seattle, and Las Vegas, making such visits an important opportunity to nurture the next generation of faithful and community leaders.
