THE CLIMB OF PERSEVERANCE: Diran Avagyan
Published - 21 March 2025

Recently, my family and I took a getaway to Lake Arrowhead, escaping the city’s hustle and bustle. As we drove uphill through the winding CA-18 and CA-173 highways, we were greeted by the scenic views of the San Bernardino Mountains - snow-capped peaks surrounded by dense pine forests. Once we reached 2,000 feet in elevation, we could feel our ears popping due to the change in barometric pressure. Yet, we continued driving up the narrow, sweeping curves along the mountain ridges until we reached 5,000 feet.

At high altitudes, breathing is usually more difficult because there is less oxygen. However, the crisp, clean mountain air, lower allergens, natural beauty, and serenity create a paradoxical feeling - it feels easier to breathe, as if inhaling something extra pure. The truth is that after a while, our bodies adapt by producing more red blood cells to carry oxygen more efficiently.

I experience a similar feeling during Great Lent. As a foodie, abstaining from animal products is a significant challenge for me. During the first week, I get headaches, feel constantly hungry, and become agitated. But as the days and weeks pass, my body begins to adjust - I feel lighter, healthier, and more energized. Recognizing the health benefits of Lent becomes a great source of motivation.

Through this personal reflection, I invite you to think about the most difficult journeys in your life - those you embarked on with hesitation, doubt, and reluctance. Remember how you hated your life every time you stumbled upon a challenge. Think about the times you considered turning back. Yet, you persevered for the sake of your end goal. The prospect of victory kept you motivated and moving forward. And when you finally accomplished your journey despite all the difficulties, remember how good it felt.

During Great Lent and every day, let us remain focused on our goals and not be discouraged by the challenges life throws at us. Let us be resilient and committed to finishing the journeys we have begun so that, in the end, we may rejoice in our accomplishments, knowing that perseverance always leads to something greater.

As scripture reminds us: "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him." (James 1:12)
