Primate Celebrant at St. Sarkis Armenian Church in Santa Clarita
Published - 21 February 2025

On February 15, 2025, the Armenian Apostolic Church solemnly commemorated the Feast of St. Sarkis the Warrior. In honor of this sacred occasion, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese, paid a pastoral visit to St. Sarkis Armenian Church in Santa Clarita on the following day, where he celebrated the Divine Liturgy and delivered an inspiring sermon.

As part of the traditional observance, the Madagh, a sacred offering, was prepared and distributed to the faithful in remembrance of St. Sarkis and his son, St. Mardiros.

During the visit, at the request of the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Zaven Markosyan, Archbishop Derderian recognized two devoted parishioners, Misak Baghdassarian and Seda Abajian, with the prestigious Diocesan “Hye Spirit” Award, honoring their unwavering dedication and service to the parish. The Archbishop also commended Fr. Markosyan’s pastoral leadership and presented him with a miniature painting of the Holy Mother of God and the Infant Jesus as a token of appreciation.

Following the Divine Liturgy, a heartfelt reception took place in the church hall, where students from St. Sarkis Saturday School, members of ACYO, and performers from the SCV Dance Academy captivated attendees with uplifting performances, further enriching the spirit of community and faith.

The Primate extended his gratitude to all who contributed to the meaningful celebration, reaffirming the enduring legacy of St. Sarkis and the unwavering faith of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
