A Visionary for Armenian Education
Published - 7 February 2025

SAAS and Nalvarian schools were privileged to host Arpi Avanesian this week, a true visionary in Armenian education. Ms. Avanesian brings over 25 years of invaluable experience within California’s educational landscape, and her commitment to the growth of Armenian schools in the Diaspora is unwavering. From her leadership at the AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School to her recent appointment as principal of the Narinyan Armenian School in Glendale, her impact is undeniable.

Beyond her administrative roles, Ms. Avanesian serves on the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church’s Educational Board, where she authored and launched the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) certification project. This pioneering initiative will enable students who complete seven years of Saturday school to pursue WASC accreditation, potentially fulfilling university second language requirements— a major step forward for our community language schools.

Ms. Avanesian's visit included classroom observations and a review of curriculums, where she highlighted the essential connection between religious, cultural, and historical studies and the preservation of Armenian identity. She met with SAAS teachers and Board members to discuss future collaborations and enhanced programming, including opportunities for students to participate in language olympiads, summer camps, and enriching trips to Armenia.
